Can cork flooring work in bathrooms?
Bathroom flooring answer
Bathroom cork flooring needs the right product and installation plan. Glue-down cork tiles, cork-safe adhesive, prepared subfloor, finish protection, ventilation, and fast spill cleanup matter more than treating cork as a sealed wet-room floor.
- For bathrooms, check the selected tile’s moisture, adhesive and finishing requirements before ordering.
- Moisture planning: review ventilation, subfloor, fixtures, edges, and finish protection.
- Next step: order samples and ask a flooring specialist before buying full boxes.
Cork can be a warm, comfortable bathroom floor when you use glue-down cork tiles, prepare the subfloor properly and seal the surface with water-based polyurethane. Cork contains suberin, a natural waxy substance that helps it resist water, and a sealed tile floor has no grout lines to scrub.

Is cork right for your bathroom?
| Your bathroom | Our advice |
|---|---|
| Powder room, half bath or a family bathroom with an exhaust fan | Good fit for sealed glue-down cork tiles. |
| Full bathroom with a tub or shower | Glue-down tiles, sealed with two coats, with bath mats and a working fan. Wipe up standing water. |
| Wet room, curbless shower floor or a room that is regularly flooded | Not recommended. Use a tiled shower pan and cork outside the wet zone. |
Why glue-down tiles, not floating planks
Glue-down tiles are solid cork, bonded edge to edge and sealed across the whole surface, so water has no open click joints to reach. Floating planks have a fibreboard core and are better suited to the rest of the house.
Moisture and subfloor prep
- Use a suitable substrate: concrete at or above grade, cement backer board, or smooth, sound plywood. OSB and fibreboard are not suitable.
- Make it smooth and clean: sand, patch and remove old flooring, paint and adhesive. Over ceramic tile, a Portland-based leveling compound is a job for a professional.
- Galvanized screws or nails reduce rust risk where leveling compound or moisture is present.
- On concrete, run a concrete moisture test before ordering.
- After installation, apply the finish coats before the bathroom is used.
