Cork Flooring Transition Moldings Guide: T-Moldings, Reducers, Nosings & End Caps
One of the most common questions we receive is:
“What transition molding do I need for my cork flooring?”
The answer depends on the type of flooring you are connecting to and whether the two floors are at the same height or different heights.
This guide explains the most common transition pieces used with cork flooring and how to order them.
T-Molding (Same Height Floors)
A T-Molding is used when two hard surface floors meet and are approximately the same height.
Examples include:
-
Cork flooring to hardwood flooring
-
Cork flooring to laminate flooring
-
Cork flooring to engineered wood flooring
-
Cork flooring to vinyl plank flooring
-
Cork flooring to tile flooring of similar height
A T-Molding covers the expansion gap between the two floors while providing a clean, professional appearance.
Custom-Made T-Moldings
We can custom manufacture T-Moldings to match most of our cork floating flooring colors.
Important Information:
-
T-Moldings are a special order item.
-
Production time is approximately 2 weeks.
-
T-Moldings are manufactured from the flooring you order to provide the closest possible color match.
-
We recommend ordering the T-Molding at the same time as your flooring.
How to Order
When viewing your flooring product online, scroll to the bottom of the product page and look for the matching T-Molding link.
You can also search the flooring color name on our website and the matching T-Molding should appear in the search results.
T-Molding Is NOT Recommended for Carpet Transitions
A common mistake is trying to use a T-Molding between cork flooring and carpet.
In most cases, this is not recommended.
For cork-to-carpet transitions, a PVC or metal carpet transition strip available from your local flooring store is usually a better solution.
These transition pieces are specifically designed to secure carpet edges and provide a safer transition.
Reducers (Different Height Floors)
A Reducer is used when transitioning from a higher floor to a lower floor.
Examples include:
-
Cork flooring to lower tile
-
Cork flooring to concrete
-
Cork flooring to lower hardwood
-
Cork flooring to lower vinyl flooring
The purpose of a reducer is to gradually reduce the height difference between the two floors.
Do You Manufacture Reducers?
Unfortunately, we cannot custom manufacture reducers from our cork floating flooring.
The reason is simple:
Most floating cork floors are only 9.5mm to 12mm thick. This thickness is sufficient to manufacture a T-Molding but not thick enough to create a durable reducer profile.
What Should I Do If I Need a Reducer?
The best solution is to visit a local flooring or hardwood store.
Take your cork flooring sample with you and select a reducer profile that matches the height difference of your floors.
After selecting the profile, you can:
-
Use it as-is if the color complements your floor.
-
Have it stained to better match your cork flooring.
-
Choose a complementary color rather than trying to achieve an exact match.
In many cases, a complementary wood color looks better than attempting to create a perfect color match.
Stair Nosings
Stair nosings are used on stair edges to provide a safe and professional finish.
Like T-Moldings, stair nosings are custom-made and require approximately 2 weeks for production.
Because these are special-order items, we do not maintain large inventories.
If you require stair nosings, we recommend ordering them together with your flooring whenever possible.
End Caps
End caps are used where flooring meets:
-
Sliding doors
-
Exterior doors
-
Fireplace hearths
-
Fixed objects
End caps are available by special request.
They are not currently listed on our website.
If you require an end cap, please email our customer service team and we will be happy to assist you.
Do You Provide T-Molding or Nosing Samples?
No.
Because T-Moldings and stair nosings are custom-made products, we do not provide color samples of these items.
However, if you are ordering flooring samples and would like to see the profile shape and construction, simply add a note to your sample order:
“Please add a nosing sample.”
We can include a sample piece showing the profile structure.
Please note:
-
The sample will not match your flooring color.
-
It is provided only to demonstrate the shape and construction of the molding.
Should I Order My Flooring and Moldings Together?
Option 1: Save on Shipping
Order your flooring and custom moldings together.
Advantages:
-
One shipment
-
Lower overall shipping cost
-
Everything arrives together
Disadvantage:
-
You must wait approximately 2 weeks for molding production before shipment.
Option 2: Receive Flooring Faster
Place separate orders for flooring and moldings.
Advantages:
-
Flooring ships immediately
-
Installation can begin sooner
Disadvantage:
-
Additional shipping charges may apply for the second shipment.
