Cork Floor Maintenance

How to Clean and Maintain Cork Floors: A Complete Guide

Cork flooring is a durable, eco-friendly, and comfortable option for homes, offering the resilience of hardwood with added warmth and sound absorption. However, like any flooring material, cork requires proper care to maintain its beauty and longevity. Follow these simple cleaning and maintenance tips to keep your cork floors looking their best for years to come.

Daily and Weekly Cleaning

1. Sweep or Vacuum Regularly

Dirt, sand, and debris can scratch cork floors over time. To prevent damage:

  • Sweep daily with a soft-bristle broom.

  • Vacuum weekly using a soft brush attachment (never a beater bar, which can damage the finish).

2. Damp Mop Weekly

 To clean safely:

  • Use a microfiber mop lightly dampened with warm water (never hot).

  • If needed, mix 1 tablespoon of pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner per 1 gallon of water.

  • Wring out the mop thoroughly—it should be damp, not wet. Excess water can seep between tiles, causing swelling, gaps, or mold.

  • Dry the floor immediately with a clean, soft cloth to prevent moisture absorption.

Dealing with Spills and Stains

  • Clean spills immediately to prevent liquid from seeping into unsealed areas.

  • For stubborn stains, gently scrub with a fine-grain steel wool pad (avoid harsh abrasives).

  • Never use wax, oil-based, ammonia, or solvent cleaners, as they can damage the finish.

Protecting Your Cork Floors

1. Prevent Scratches and Dents

  • Place felt pads under furniture legs.

  • Avoid dragging heavy objects—use glide tracks or plywood when moving appliances.

  • Keep pet nails trimmed to minimize scratches.

  • High heels (especially stilettos) can dent cork. If indentations occur, apply a hot, damp cloth to help the cork rebound.

2. Use Proper Doormats

  • Place rattan or non-rubber-backed mats at entryways to trap dirt.

  • Avoid rubber mats, which can trap moisture or discolor cork.

Long-Term Maintenance: Resealing Cork Floors

Cork floors with a polyurethane finish need resealing every 5–10 years (more often in high-traffic areas).

How to Reseal Cork Floors

  1. Lightly buff (screen) the floor to remove residue and prepare the surface.

  2. Apply water-based polyurethane (Loba 2K Supra A.T.) with a short hair microfiber roller in one direction.

    • Work quickly—the “wet edge” lasts only 15–20 minutes

  3. Allow 4–6 hours drying time between coats.

    • Apply 2 coats for normal use, 3 coats for heavy traffic.

  4. Wait 5 hours before light use (walking in socks only).

  5. Full curing takes 3 days—avoid furniture, rugs, or shoes during this time.

What NOT to Do with Cork Floors

❌ Don’t use steam mops—excess moisture can warp the finish.
❌ Don’t use abrasive cleaners, wax, or ammonia-based products.
❌ Don’t let water pool—always wipe up spills immediately.
❌ Don’t place heavy rugs or furniture on freshly sealed floors before they cure.

Final Thoughts

Cork flooring is low-maintenance but requires gentle, consistent care. By following these simple steps—regular sweeping, damp mopping, prompt spill cleanup, and periodic resealing—your cork floors will stay beautiful and durable for decades.

With minimal effort, your cork floors can remain a warm, stylish, and sustainable feature in your home for years to come!
